Creating Autumn Leaves Sourdough With Air-Brushing

Fall has arrived, and what better way to celebrate the season than with a beautiful loaf of sourdough bread? I recently experimented with a new technique that combines air-brushing and leaf shapes, resulting in stunning autumn-inspired loaves. Whether you prefer Za’atar, Smoked Paprika, or Herbes de Provence, you can use any sourdough recipe you like for this project.

Version 1

To begin, I air-brushed a mixture of three colors: red, orange, and green. While the vibrant green hue unfortunately disappeared during baking, this attempt still yielded a colorful and eye-catching loaf.

Version 2

In my second attempt, I decided to skip the green color altogether due to its lack of impact after baking. Instead, I used red, orange, and yellow for a more vibrant and visually appealing combination.

Version 3

For my final version, I decided to switch things up. Instead of relying solely on air-brushing, I used real leaves to mask parts of the dough. I spray-painted the dough black, then used the air-brush to highlight the leaves with red and yellow. The result was the most dramatic and visually stunning loaf of all.

One advantage of using an air-brush for this technique is that unlike charcoal or cocoa powder, the black color won’t smear on your fingers when handling or slicing the bread.

Stay tuned for more exciting adventures with air-brushing and bread. There are countless possibilities to explore, and Instagram and Pinterest are overflowing with inspiration. It’s difficult to decide what to try next!
