Taiwan to Investigate Huawei’s Taiwanese Suppliers for Possible Violation of US Sanctions

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced an investigation into Taiwanese suppliers involved with Huawei. The investigation aims to determine if these suppliers have violated any US sanctions and assisted in the operation of Huawei’s chipmaking factories in China. The probe will cover at least four Taiwanese firms, including Topco Scientific Co., L&K Engineering Co., and United Integrated Services Co.

The suppliers are allegedly supporting Huawei in wastewater and environmental projects. This move comes as the US seeks allies to counter Beijing’s efforts to accelerate domestic chip manufacturing. In recent years, the US has increased restrictions on chip exports to China.

The Biden administration has been under pressure to take additional measures to impede China’s advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Separately, concerns have been raised over Huawei’s advanced chips being used in 5G-enabled smartphones. Last month, the US government initiated a probe into the chips used in supporting Huawei’s smartphones.

Previously, Huawei and ZTE were banned from supplying equipment to the US government in 2018 through the Defense Authorization Act. This was followed by a general import ban. The US has also imposed restrictions on the use of Huawei network equipment by rural telecom carriers.
