Sony’s PlayStation Chief Jim Ryan to Retire in 2023

Jim Ryan, who has led Sony’s PlayStation video game console business, has announced his retirement. Ryan, who has been with the company for nearly 30 years, joined Sony in 1994 and became the chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2019. Citing difficulties in reconciling living in Europe and working in North America, Ryan expressed his decision to retire in a blog post. Hiroki Totoki, another top executive at Sony, will take over as interim chief executive after Ryan’s departure in March.

Sony, a dominant player in the video game industry, has been known for popular franchises such as Spider-Man and The Last of Us. The release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020 was well-received, with Sony selling over 40 million units. Nintendo and Microsoft are Sony’s main competitors in the market. Microsoft has been making efforts to catch up to Sony, including a subscription service and acquisitions of game studios. Sony itself has also made acquisitions, including the purchase of Bungie, the studio behind the Destiny franchise.
