Reddit Enhances Search functionality and Accessibility for Screen Readers

Reddit has recently implemented updates to revamp its search feature and improve accessibility for screen reader users. The platform now offers a dedicated “media” tab within search and individual subreddits, simplifying the browsing experience for images, video clips, and GIFs. The overall design of search results on the app and website has also been streamlined for a cleaner and more intuitive look.

In addition, Reddit has made significant improvements for users accessing the mobile version of its site without logging in. These enhancements include expanded filters and separate tabs for comments and posts. Furthermore, the performance of mobile web searches has been optimized, resulting in an impressive 85 percent increase in speed.

Reddit has also prioritized accessibility for individuals who rely on screen readers, offering compatibility with native mobile apps. This means that posts and comments tabs on the search results page are now compatible with screen readers, providing a more inclusive experience. The platform has incorporated labels, roles/traits, values, and states into these pages, enabling screen reader users to effortlessly discover and engage with content.

These updates serve as a step towards addressing long-standing accessibility concerns raised by users, particularly those from the blind community. Although the changes do not directly address existing issues with the platform’s moderation tools for blind users, they significantly enhance the browsing experience for individuals utilizing screen readers.
