Protection for Writers in AI-powered Entertainment Industry

In the wake of the Hollywood writers’ strike, concerns were raised about the threat of AI replacing human screenwriters. However, the new WGA contract includes provisions against the displacement of writers by AI. The contract explicitly states that AI cannot be used to write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated content will not be considered as source material. This means that writers will retain sole credit for their creative works. Additionally, while writers may choose to use AI in their writing process, companies cannot force them to do so. Companies must also disclose if any material provided to writers was generated by AI. These protections are seen as a victory for writers, but the battle to protect human labor in the face of increasing automation is far from over.
