Prime Video Releases First Look at Upcoming Fallout Show

Yesterday, Prime Video unveiled the much-anticipated upcoming Fallout show, giving viewers a full glimpse into what they can expect. The series is based on the popular RPG franchise developed by Interplay and Bethesda, and from the looks of it, the show stays true to the essence of the games, making it a fitting continuation of the Fallout universe.

During a roundtable interview at CCXP, showrunner Graham Wagner made it clear that they wanted the show to seamlessly fit into the franchise’s lore. Working alongside executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, as well as co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Wagner wanted to capture the spirit and atmosphere of the games while delivering a unique television experience. In order to do so, they decided to shift the narrative focus onto three main characters instead of creating a single player character. This way, they could explore different aspects of the Fallout universe.

The three characters at the center of the show are Lucy (played by Ella Purnell), Maximus (played by Aaron Moten), and the Ghoul (played by Walton Goggins). Lucy is the daughter of Vault 33’s Overseer and embarks on a journey to explore the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Los Angeles. Maximus is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, a powerful faction within the Fallout universe. Lastly, the Ghoul is a centuries-old bounty hunter. By having these three characters with distinct backgrounds and motivations, the creators aimed to capture the essence of the RPG mechanics seen in the games.

While discussing the challenges of translating the player-made Vault Dweller concept from the games to the TV series, Nolan mentioned a “brilliant hack” used by the creators. By drawing inspiration from Sergio Leone’s iconic film “The Good, The Bad, & the Ugly,” they were able to represent the morality and gray areas seen in the Fallout games. Nolan expressed that this approach allowed them to convey the ambitious scope of the games’ world building and storytelling in a very different mode.

With Fallout 76 marking the last release in the game series and the last single-player game being Fallout 4 released in 2015, the fans have been eagerly waiting for a new installment. Although it may take years for a traditional Fallout 5 to arrive, the release of this Fallout show on Prime Video provides a significant source of entertainment for Fallout enthusiasts. Depending on when the next game materializes and the show’s success, treating the show as a continuation of the mainline games may turn out to be a great decision by Wagner and his team.

Prime Video is set to release the Fallout series on April 12, 2024.
