Microsoft Integrates Project with Planner to Create a Unified Work Management Tool

Introduction

Microsoft has recently announced its plans to integrate the online version of its Project app into its Planner app in order to create a single tool for work management. Project has been Microsoft’s primary tool for project management and work coordination for nearly four decades. However, Microsoft has introduced simpler and more accessible tools such as Planner and To Do for team and individual work tracking.

The Change in Stages

Microsoft outlined a three-stage process for the integration. Firstly, the existing ‘Tasks by Planner and To Do’ app in Teams will be rebranded as Planner. Secondly, the new Planner app in Teams will be made available in Spring 2024. At this point, the ‘Project for the web’ app will also be rebranded as Planner, with no changes to existing Project features. Finally, the Planner web app with integrated ‘Project for the web’ features will be made available in late 2024.

Benefits of the Integration

This integration is aimed at providing a comprehensive work management solution that caters to a broader user base. The Planner app is designed to meet the requirements of team members who do not need advanced project management features but can benefit from collaborative to-do lists and simple work tracking tools.

New Features and Pricing

In addition to the integration, Microsoft has promised new features for Planner, including the introduction of a premium tier and the integration of its Copilot generative AI assistant. This AI assistant will enable users to generate plans, set goals, track status, and adapt to changes in projects. Pricing details for Copilot in Planner will be announced in the coming months. Microsoft also plans to integrate Planner with Loop, Outlook, Teams, and Viva Goals, allowing for seamless collaboration and task management.
