Sleep can be frustrating. When one is desperate for some much-needed rest, they staring up at the ceiling, so alert they could probably pilot a Moon lander. But when at work or in class and desperately need that level of wakefulness, they find their head nodding and keep losing time in five-minute increments.

In those moments, it is natural to turn to the old friend caffeine. And hey, caffeine works! Slamming some coffee or an energy drink (or caffeine pills, if one is hardcore) definitely gives the short-term boost needed to power through the afternoon doldrums or that all-nighter they have found themselves mired in. But caffeine is not always the best option. While moderate doses can help keep one awake and might even have some health benefits, too much can have a negative impact on their health, and even moderate amounts can affect their overall sleep patterns, locking them into an endless loop of being exhausted and relying on caffeine to get through their days.

Fortunately, it is actually not that hard to stay awake without resorting to caffeine. If one is powering through a sleepy afternoon or a long night and needs to stay up without it, here is how:

  1. Water and Snacks: Caffeine is a short-term solution for staying awake. The better option is to give oneself an energy boost with the two things the body needs for that energy: water and nutrition. Drinking some clean, cold water will probably jolt them into a higher state of alertness and wakefulness. Drinking sufficient water every day is not just very good for them, but it is also going to help them sleep better in general so they do not get drowsy when they need to work. In terms of nutrition, eating a snack can provide a more effective energy boost than the temporary spike of caffeine or sugar. Going for high-protein snacks that include carbohydrates and fats will boost their energy level and help regulate how their body burns that energy.
  2. Exercise and Activity: If one is dozing off at their desk, it might be time to take a break. Instead of grabbing yet another cup of coffee, they can stand up and move around for a few minutes. Exercise boosts energy levels and reduces feelings of fatigue, and even low-impact activity like taking a short walk can wake them up and sharpen their brain. Another option is to go outside to get some sunlight. Sunlight has a powerful effect on the body and has been shown to impact alertness and energy levels. Just being outside can spike mental acuity and help keep them awake and alert.
  3. Power Napping: The counter-intuitive way to stay awake without caffeine is to sleep a little bit. A power nap of as little as 10 minutes can have a huge positive effect on alertness and clarity. For a longer nap, up to an hour, one could plan ahead and schedule it earlier in the day to avoid feeling sleepy altogether.
