Google Unveils Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Watch 2

At Google’s recent event, the company unveiled its latest offerings: the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, as well as the Pixel Watch 2. While some details were already known, the event showcased the new features and updates in Android 14, which will be available on these devices. The focus was on the AI-based software, including improvements to Google Assistant and photo editing tools. Notable hardware updates include the new Tensor G3 AI-accelerator, improved screen brightness, a temperature sensor, and upgraded cameras.

The Pixel Watch 2 also received enhancements, such as more accurate heart-rate sensing and safety features. The event also highlighted updates to other devices, such as the Pixel Buds Pro (with AI enhancements) and the Pixel Fold (featuring Dual Screen translation). Additionally, Google announced expanded support and updates for Pixel devices, extending to seven years.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones offer a range of hardware and software upgrades. The screen sizes remain the same, but adaptive refresh rates have been improved for better battery efficiency. The design now features rounder edges, creating a calming aesthetic. Both phones come with new cameras using dual-conversion gain sensors for high dynamic range imaging. The Pixel 8 Pro also includes autofocus for its front camera.

A new Video Boost feature automatically enhances videos by retouching shadows and reducing noise through cloud processing. The camera app gets manual controls for photographers, and there are additional AI-boosted features like Best Take and Audio Magic Eraser. The Pixel 8 Pro has a few unique features, such as a temperature sensor, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, and in-phone AI foundation models.

Alongside the smartphones, Google introduced the Pixel Watch 2, incorporating Fitbit Sense 2 capabilities and adding features like temperature and stress monitoring. It also includes a better heart rate sensor, improved training tools, and various safety features. The watch ships on October 12th at a price of $350.
