Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro: New Features and Upgrades

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro: New Features and Upgrades

Google announced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro at its Made by Google event, showcasing some exciting new features. While the two smartphones look similar to their predecessors, they come with a few notable differences. The standard Pixel 8 is slightly smaller, making it easier to use with one hand, while the Pro model has a new matte finish, upgraded cameras, and a temperature sensor.

Both phones feature Google’s Tensor G3 processor, improvements to the Assistant, and come with seven years of Android and security updates. This means users will be able to enjoy their Pixel flagship phones for longer than ever before.

One intriguing feature of the Pixel 8 Pro is the temperature sensor. Although many may consider it a gimmick, the sensor offers possibilities such as checking the temperature of bathwater and ensuring the right temperature for cooking. However, it remains to be seen if this feature will truly be useful in the long run.

With generative AI being popular in 2023, Google has integrated it into the Assistant in the Pixel 8 series. Users can now ask the Assistant to summarize, read aloud, and translate articles and web pages. The new read aloud tool, in particular, provides playback controls and allows for translation into various languages.

Google has continued to improve its camera capabilities in the Pixel 8 series, with upgrades to both hardware and software. The cameras offer sharper images, better video recording and processing, and features such as Video Boost and Audio Magic Eraser to enhance the user experience. The redesigned camera app also includes a Pro mode for manual control over settings.

Other updates in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro include improvements to Face Unlock, updates to the displays, and the introduction of the Tensor G3 chip. The phones have larger screens, with the Pixel 8 refreshing at 120Hz and the Pro maintaining the same size as its predecessor. Battery life, performance, and other aspects will need to be tested in the real world to provide a comprehensive review.
