Fox’s Tubi Teams Up with the Black List for To Be Commissioned Initiative
In a surprising collaboration, Fox’s ad-supported free streaming video on demand (SVOD) service, Tubi, has partnered with the Black List, a well-known screenwriting resource, to identify and develop five genre scripts for production and distribution. This unique joint venture, dubbed the “To Be Commissioned” Initiative, aims to support both emerging and established writers.
Seeking Scripts that Speak to Young, Diverse Audiences
Tubi and the Black List are specifically looking for scripts that resonate with young, diverse audiences. The selected scripts must fall into one of the following categories: science fiction, faith, comedy, or romance. In addition to these established genres, there is room for a “wild card” script that explores genres beyond the traditional categories.
The Selection Process
A committee consisting of Tubi representatives will be responsible for choosing the five scripts to be developed. Once selected, the Black List, known for identifying promising scripts in Hollywood, will serve as executive producers for the resulting films.
The Potential Impact
This partnership has tremendous potential for the chosen writers, as Tubi is currently the most-watched free streaming service in the United States. The Tubi Original Movies, expected to debut in 2025, will showcase the work of these talented filmmakers to a wide audience.
Submission Details
Aspiring writers interested in participating in the initiative should note the following submission requirements:
- 18 years of age or older
- Scripts must be in English
The submission window will close on March 15, 2024. However, it’s important to be aware that there is a financial component to the submission process. Writers are required to have a Black List account, which costs $30 per month for hosting their scripts. Additionally, writers can choose to include script evaluations, which range in cost from $70 to $100. To encourage diversity and inclusivity, Tubi will provide fee waivers for one script evaluation and one month of hosting for 200 writers from traditionally underrepresented communities.
