Doctor Who Showrunner Reflects on Handling of Doctor and Yaz’s Relationship

The Doctor and Yaz’s relationship in Doctor Who has always had a unique bond, but it wasn’t until the penultimate episode of Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the Doctor that their romantic feelings were explicitly explored. Showrunner Chris Chibnall now admits that he might have handled their relationship differently.

In a recent episode of the WHO Corner to Corner podcast, Chibnall described the Doctor and Yaz’s dynamic as an ‘unrequited love story,’ although he acknowledged that the feelings between them were mutual. According to him, keeping their relationship unfulfilled added an extra layer of heartbreak to their narrative.

Chibnall argued that the Doctor and Yaz’s final scene together, where they sat on top of the TARDIS looking at the Earth, served as an emotionally resonant moment and was meant to symbolize their unspoken affection. He emphasized that a romantic kiss between them would have changed that scene and its significance.

However, Chibnall did express the possibility of exploring their relationship differently in hindsight, suggesting that he might have made their queer connection more explicitly textual. But for now, fans will have to accept the narrative choices that were made.
