Cruise’s CEO Kyle Vogt Steps Down as Robotaxi Company Experiences Leadership Changes

Leadership Changes at Cruise

In a surprising move, Kyle Vogt, co-founder and CEO of Cruise, has announced his resignation. After a decade of success, Vogt expressed gratitude for the journey and the milestone of providing over 250,000 driverless rides across multiple cities. However, he is now ready to take a break and explore new ideas.

No replacement has been named for the vacant CEO spot. Instead, General Motors has promoted Mo Elshenawy, the current Executive Vice President of Engineering at Cruise, to the position of President and CTO of the robotaxi subsidiary.

Recent Changes at General Motors

Vogt’s departure follows another significant change within General Motors. The company appointed its Executive Vice President of Legal and Policy, Craig Glidden, as Chief Administrative Officer of Cruise. Glidden now oversees the legal, communications, and finance teams at the autonomous vehicle firm.

General Motors is also in the process of conducting an expanded safety investigation after a tragic accident involving a Cruise robotaxi. The collision occurred when a human driver hit a pedestrian, leading to the robotaxi running over and dragging the pedestrian for a distance. As a result, both autonomous and manual vehicle operations at Cruise have been temporarily suspended, impacting a fleet of 950 robotaxis.
