Beware of the Elon Musk “Freedom Giveaway” Scam on Twitter

The “Freedom Giveaway” is a crypto scam that targets Twitter users. Cybercriminals add random Twitter accounts to a list, often those who recently followed Elon Musk or his companies but sometimes others as well. At the top of the list, scammers include a fake image of an Elon Musk tweet announcing a big crypto giveaway, directing users to a phony website.

Upon visiting the website, users are asked to confirm their age and then presented with a clean and authentic-looking landing page featuring Elon Musk’s picture. They are then asked to answer a few questions about Musk or his companies. After answering the questions, the victims are directed to enter their BTC wallet address.

The scammers claim that by entering their wallet address, victims will receive multiple returns on their investment. The website states that the giveaway will end after 5,000 participants, and there is a fake counter to create a sense of urgency.

If users fall for the scam and send crypto to the scammer’s wallet, they will not receive anything in return. Scammers can also hack users’ devices through a QR code on the website or attempt to steal funds from their wallets.

If individuals are added to a Twitter list but haven’t visited the scam website, they should remove themselves from the list and report the scammer’s account. If they have already fallen for the scam, they should transfer their funds to a new wallet, disconnect and scan their device for malware, and reset network settings.

It is important to remain vigilant on social media platforms and spread awareness of this scam to protect others.
