An Adventure on Tuesday Group Ride

On a recent Tuesday group ride, the author was expecting a flat ride and decided to take their recumbent bicycle. Little did they know, the route had a surprise in store – a steep climb up Malech Road. Despite having just put on a new rear cluster with better shifting but a higher gear range, the author managed to make it up the climb, though their heart rate reached 144. Nevertheless, the detour turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it took them past the new Coyote Ridge open space preserve.

Commonly known as Coyote Ridge in English, the preserve is referred to as Máyyan ‘Ooyákma in the language of the Indigenous People of the area, the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. Partnering with the Muwekma Ohlone, the Open Space Authority aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these irreplaceable landscapes. Previously, access to the area was limited to docent-led hikes or special occasions.

After exploring the preserve, the group continued towards Metcalf Park before returning to town for lunch on the Coyote Creek Trail. The entire ride lasted around 3 and a half hours, providing the author with a satisfying workout.
