Baked Apple Cider French Toast

This delicious baked apple cider French toast is the perfect fall breakfast or brunch. It combines the flavors of apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, pecans, and apple cider for a flavorful and indulgent treat.

Start by choosing a quality loaf of bread, such as challah, French bread, or sourdough, as this will make a difference in the final result. Let the bread sit out for a few hours to become slightly stale, or toast it lightly in the oven if you’re short on time.

In a bowl, mix together the egg custard using eggs, apple cider, milk, brown sugar, orange zest, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Dip the bread slices in the custard and arrange them in a greased casserole dish.

In a skillet, cook sliced apples in a mixture of butter, apple cider, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and salt. Once the apples are slightly softened and the sauce has thickened, stir in pecans.

Spoon the apple mixture over the soaked bread slices, pressing some slices down in between the bread. Pour any remaining sauce over the top. At this point, you can cover the casserole and refrigerate it overnight, or for at least 3 hours for the bread to soak and flavors to infuse.

When you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven and bake the casserole uncovered for about 45-55 minutes, until the center is set and no longer runny. Once it’s done, let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
