US Concerned Over Huawei’s Advanced Chip in New Phone

During a Senate committee hearing, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo expressed concerns over reports of an advanced chip in Huawei’s latest smartphone, the Mate 60 Pro. The Chinese tech giant unveiled the phone in late August, featuring a China-made 7-nanometer processor. Analysts and US officials became wary of this development, as it indicated Huawei may have bypassed US controls on access to cutting-edge semiconductors. Previously, Huawei relied on non-Chinese firms for advanced chips but was cut off due to national security concerns. The US is expected to announce expanded controls on chip sales to China soon. However, stopping Chinese companies like Huawei from establishing their own domestic chip supply chains may prove challenging for the US.
