Researchers Ask AI to Design Walking Robot, Get Surprising Results

A group of researchers from Northwestern University, MIT, and the University of Vermont asked an artificial intelligence (AI) system to design a robot capable of walking. The AI quickly generated a blueprint for a robot that the researchers described as “small, squishy, and misshapen.” It walks by spasming when filled with air. Unlike robots designed by humans to resemble familiar objects, this robot had a peculiar shape that looked nothing like any animal that has ever walked the earth.

Sam Kriegman, the lead researcher behind the study, highlighted that AI has the ability to create new possibilities and paths that humans have never even considered. He added that the researchers were uncertain why the robot ended up with this unique design and why it had so many holes. This research presents another example of the unexpected outcomes that can arise when combining AI and robotics.

In the past, Boston Dynamics, a robotics company, has dedicated years to developing walking robots. However, this study demonstrates how AI can take a different approach and come up with designs that humans may never have imagined. The field of AI and robotics continues to evolve, with AI-powered robots being appointed as CEOs and even demonstrating remarkable responses, such as giving reporters the side-eye when questioned about rebellion.
