Operators of the Seven Canyons Golf Club in Sedona, Arizona have found a potential solution to fend off javelinas damaging their turf – chili oil. These pig-like peccaries have been causing significant damage to the golf course, with the lack of rain and unusually hot weather likely driving them to forage for food. The golf club has been working with the Arizona Game & Fish Department to find a way to coexist with the javelinas. In the past, attempts to repel them using coyote urine proved unsuccessful. However, chili oil seems to be the most effective repellent currently. The golf club plans to create a spray using a concentrate of chili oil until the temperatures cool down, prompting the javelinas to shift their focus. Finding the right formulation is key to protecting the grass while dealing with the wildlife.
