New York City Mayor Eric Adams Faces FBI Investigation

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is under investigation by the FBI, but he has avoided answering questions about the matter. Agents recently seized his phones and raided the home of his chief campaign fundraiser. The investigation is believed to be focused on whether Adams inappropriately aided the government of Turkey in gaining city approval for a skyscraper with diplomatic facilities. It is also examining whether the Adams campaign received illegal campaign contributions from foreign sources.

Adams, who was Brooklyn’s borough president at the time, has denied any wrongdoing and stated that he will cooperate with investigators. The investigation comes as Adams has begun his term as mayor, but he continues to attend public events and fulfill his public duties.

The Turkevi Center, which opened in September 2021, is at the center of the investigation. The building, intended to house Turkey’s consulate and mission to the United Nations, faced concerns about fire safety systems and had its fire-protection plan rejected by the city’s Fire Department. Adams allegedly contacted Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro inquiring about the occupancy permit for the tower, leading to questions about the approval process.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan is overseeing the investigation but has refused to comment. The investigation is ongoing, and further details about its findings have not been disclosed.
