Lightspeed and GamesBeat Announce the Inaugural List of Game Changers
Lightspeed and GamesBeat have joined forces to unveil the inaugural list of Game Changers, which features the most innovative gaming startups for 2024. The announcement was made by Lightspeed’s Moritz Baier-Lentz and GamesBeat’s Dean Takahashi at the conclusion of the GamesBeat Next conference in San Francisco.
Video games have had a significant impact on consumer behavior and technological innovation for over 50 years. As more and more of our time is spent in immersive virtual worlds, gaming continues to play a crucial role in how we play, work, and connect. However, true innovation often occurs at the fringes, with startups pushing the boundaries of technology and introducing previously unimaginable user experiences.
Lightspeed and GamesBeat partnered to recognize these daring gaming companies. Nominations were sought in five key categories – Game studios, Gaming platforms, Interactive technology, Extended reality, and Blockchain and Web3. To be eligible, companies had to be in business for no more than five years and have no more than 50 full-time employees. In addition to innovation, the emphasis was placed on diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability.
After receiving numerous high-quality entries, the list was narrowed down to 100 companies over two days by Lightspeed investors and GamesBeat editors. The nominees were then evaluated by a panel of industry experts from companies such as Microsoft, Disney, Epic Games, and Tencent. Each judge voted on every candidate, and the scores were averaged to determine the final 25 Game Changers.
Best Interactive Technology: Modulate AI
Modulate AI was named the winner in the Best Interactive Technology category for their ToxMod tool. It uses AI to moderate voice chats in real time, filtering out toxic language while still preserving the excitement of the gaming experience. The software can differentiate between exuberant and abusive language in nearly 20 languages.
Best Game Studio: Gardens
Gardens emerged as the winner in the Best Game Studio category with their role-playing fantasy adventure games. The studio’s visually stunning worlds and innovative cooperative gameplay have garnered high praise from judges. Gardens was recognized not only for their technical innovations but also for their commitment to sustainability, work-life balance, and diversity.
Best Gaming Platform: Astrocade
Astrocade won the Best Gaming Platform award for its innovative use of generative AI. The platform allows anyone to become a game designer by issuing text prompts, automating the creation of interactive worlds, art, animation, and other elements. Astrocade has attracted significant attention and funding from industry veterans, and its potential impact on the gaming industry is promising.
Best Extended Reality: StatusPro
StatusPro, a company founded by former college and NFL athletes, secured the Best Extended Reality award. Their XR sports experience provides an incredibly realistic feeling of being on the field with professional players. StatusPro’s technology is utilized by NFL teams for training purposes, and their upcoming title will introduce multiplayer features for virtual competition.
Best Blockchain and Web3 Technology: Horizon
The Best Blockchain and Web3 Technology award went to Horizon for its contributions to games and Web3 infrastructure. The company’s games, including Skyweaver, have made an impact in the blockchain space, while the Sequence development platform simplifies the creation of Web3 games and apps. Horizon’s innovation has earned them recognition as one of the World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers.
