Laphonza Butler Becomes California’s New Senator, Continuing Tradition of Service

Laphonza Butler has become California’s new senator following the passing of the esteemed leader, Dianne Feinstein. Butler, speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, shared the surreal experience of receiving a call from Governor Gavin Newsom offering her the position. Although being appointed as a U.S. senator was not on her vision board or wildest dreams, she accepted the offer without much hesitation, considering the urgent need to address the imminent government shutdown.

Coming from a background dedicated to women’s economic empowerment, Butler sees it as an opportunity to contribute to the country during a crisis. She expresses deep admiration for Senator Feinstein’s decades of service and acknowledges that she may not be able to match her contributions directly.

Being sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris marks a historic moment for Butler. She becomes the first openly lesbian, Black senator in Congress and the third Black woman to serve in the Senate. However, she humbly acknowledges that she only knows how to lead as a Black woman and hopes to set an example for others who want to live their lives authentically.

A poignant moment for Butler was seeing the pride in her mother’s eyes when she shook hands with the vice president in the U.S. Capitol. It was a remarkable moment that showcased the significance of her achievement on a personal level.

Butler hopes that her appointment inspires young girls and demonstrates the possibilities available to them. While recognizing the need for a new generation of leaders, she also values the lessons learned from Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker.

As for her future plans, Butler intends to bring the story of California to the table—one that represents innovation and hope. Although she avoids commenting on whether she will run for Senate in 2024, she reaffirms her commitment to serving her constituents and fulfilling her dedication to public service.
