Controversy Arises from Meta’s AI-Generated Stickers

Meta’s new AI-generated stickers have already sparked controversy just a week after the announcement of their ‘universe of AI’ for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Some users can now create AI-generated stickers using text prompts in Facebook Messenger and Instagram Messenger. However, Meta’s content filters are failing to catch objectionable or questionable content, resulting in mashups featuring copyrighted children’s characters involved in inappropriate or controversial activities.

One artist, Pier-Olivier Desbiens, attracted significant attention by showcasing these controversial stickers on his X page. Even public figures like Elon Musk and Alex Jones have been targeted by parody stickers.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone admitted that the generative AI system could produce inaccurate or inappropriate outputs. The company pledges to continue improving these features based on user feedback.

This controversy follows a recent incident where Bloomberg’s content and audience head shared a chat session that went awry with one of Meta’s AI characters, “Brian.”

The growing concerns about security, privacy, and the fast-paced releases of AI products by Big Tech companies, including Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Copilot, should prompt caution in embracing these new AI advancements.
